General HT advice re: HD/Plasma/Cable

My present set up is a small Toshiba tube set. Atlantic Technology speakers and powered subwoofer.

Video sources include:
Panasonic RP56 DVD player
S-VHS VCR
TiVo
Pioneer LD player
Cable
Aux which can be game console or camcorder
All feed into a Sony 930 series receiver with DTS/DD. It works.

I want to improve the picture now, both larger and better. I dislike larger if it's not higher res.

My plan is/was to get a Panasonic 42" plasma set. It does very well at non-HD content and DVDs look great on it. The Pannys have the best darkest black level and at $3700 shipped, it's a good value.

BUT... it's not really HD ready. Great for DVDs using component video. I can switch other non-HD sources with the receiver. And this Plasma is supposed to be better for non-HD source material.

Going to a HD capable Plasma is another $1000 or more.

Our local cable company is just now offering HD on a number of channels, at some cost. But this means I would need a cable box (?) and a Set Top Box that can decode the HDTV. Would it then downcovert to the Panny plasma like to 720? Am I going to regret that move?

Should I also consider going with DirectTV instead of cable HDTV?

Any thoughts? Assume 50% movies/DVDs and 50% broadcast/cable stuff.

Which 42" Panasonic? They make at least 4 42" models.

And 720p is HD. I personally think it looks as good (or really close) as 1080i on sets available today.

The model I am/was looking at is the 42WD5UY which also has a consumer equivalent, but effectively is the same thing. The other option would be the 42HD5UY version which is over $5000.

But I might go to a Pioneer or some other model if that now makes more sense.

So this model can display HD 720p, but it will downconvert 1080i.

None of the current 42" Plasmas can fully resolve 720p, you'd have to go up to 50" for that.
