So who wants to test out some lamp cord for their speakers?

After reading some posts about using lamp cord as speaker wire, I couldn't get this thought out of my mind. Let's say instead of just using the cheap lamp cord to go from your speakers to your receiver, you did the following:

Find an old lamp that you don't care about
Cut the lamp cord close to the base of the lamp
Strip this end of the cord and wire it to a speaker
Plug the other end, which would be the original lamp plug, into an electrical outlet
Seriously, what would happen? The only outcome I could imagine is that speakers would make a deafening noise at 60 Hz until they exploded.

As you may guess, I have never and will never do this. If anyone is willing to risk going deaf and/or having speaker shrapnel embedded in your walls and furniture for the sake of science, please do so. And don't forget to post the results here. :)

I've done that. Since I didn't have a 1500 watt speaker it just blew the speaker. No big deal.

MTX used to do this demonstration with some of their car subs to show how much abuse they could take.

supposedly the high-end rockford fosgate car audio speakers can take the punishment for a few hours before they just stop.

some speakers (home) can handle it no problem :-)

my dad's speakers are rated at 10,000 watts. never been tried of course!

So what happens then? I started this thread as a joke, but I am curious about what would happen.

my friends family had a lamp that plugged in this way. No plug, just 2 wires stuck into the socket, loose.

you would just get a 60hz tone.

You know those sonic bombs that Jango launched into the asteroid field in Star Wars II? Those were speakers with lamp cords attached. Don't try it at home. :)

The internal wiring on most speakers would probably melt, then everything would just stop.
