Any better options than a Malata DVP-520?

Hi there,

I am thinking about getting a region free player and have about $500 to spend to hopefully get a decent one.

Question is:

Considering my budget, is there a better option out there than the Malata DVP-520, at $270?

My requirements for the player are:

PAL->NTSC Conversion
Progressive scan
X-Y scaling

I don't care about on-board DTS/DD decoder chips, as I will be using the player solely as a transport for audio.

Thanks for the help!

Follow one of the links from here to hkflix.com They've got a handful of JVC's and Malata's to choose from, different options on each one.

I just bought the Toshiba SD 2805 from HKflix.com and it converts everything PAL to NTSC perfectly.

I'm having serious issues with the Malata right now. I'm actually going to find out if i can return it for a refund if I can't fix the problems. I dunno...the more I play the more I find how cheaply made this thing is.

None of the other players mentioned will do x-y scaling. The JVC will not do this. The 220 Electronics ad is a misprint. I bought the 520 from HK Flix and, love it. I have not had the pixelization bug that many complain of. The worst thing about it is the remote which has unbelievably small buttons. I programmed my Home Theater Master MX500 remote, and put the Malata's in a drawer. No player is perfect, and yes the build quality has been reported to be a bit sketchy, but I have had no problems. This player handles non-anamorphic discs better than any I have tried including the JVC's. For the money nothing works as well.

Again...just received an email from Jeff @ HKFLIX. I have to send my 520 BACK to get a new one. Problem with the chip.

*sigh*

Thanks for the info everyone.

Doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling about any of these region free players, so I think I am leaning towards forgoing region freedom for a little while longer and upgrading my existing R1 player instead with a.....

The 520s have been remarkably reliable. Our return rate is less than 1%. The modded JVCs and Toshibas are also extremely reliable, although, like you said, they don't have XY scaling at this time. If you're interested, we do have a modded region free Pioneer ELITE 47AI.

Could anyone confirm for me weather the Malata 520 from HKflix has the VGA output?? I have heard it does but from the picture on their site it is not clear as part of the rear of the player is cut off in the photo.
Thanks

I have the 47a, and other than the known Chroma issues the player has worked wonderfully.

if you dont mind only watching dvds that america says you can watch...then domestic only is for you. for myself, no one tells me what i cant watch. if its only ava over-sea's....then ill go there to get. the Malata has worked great for a friend of mine and im buying one next week....unless someone can convince me of another player that is truley better. the price is no object.
