TV went black, high pitched noise, chemically smell, any ideas?

I own a simple Zenith 27" Television. The other day, while watching it, the screen suddenly went black. There was also a faint high pitched noise and a chemical type smell (kind of a burning smell).

Have any of you had this problem? Any idea what is wrong with it?

I'm just trying to find out some information to weigh my options.

Thanks in advance for any input.

What year was the TV made? I have one from 1989 with similar problems, but they were only temporary.

Note: It is a digital TV.

You are most likely being investigated by the federal government.

Sounds like a power transformer. I would guess it is shot :(

My Zenith is a 1998. The problem though isn't temporary.

Any idea how much it should cost to fix for a Power Converter problem?

It's a "second Tv" in my guest room and I don't really want to upgrade, however, if it is more than a $150, then I don't think its really worth fixing.

Thanks for all of your reply's, even the snide ones. =)

Hmmm... Chemical smell? Sounds like a capacitor failed. Seriously, find a local shop (as in not a retail chain) that has been servicing your community for a coupla decades and take it in for an estimate. I have an ancient (1986) Sanyo 26 incher in my bedroom that has taken 2 lightning hits in recent years (surge protected now) and each time the repair was under $100. Or you could use this as an excuse to dump it, retire your current main TV to the guest room, and invest in something huge and opulent.

Sounds like the apparent normal death of a Zenith TV after 4-5 years.... :(

I had one I bought in 94 or 95 and it died in 99?. I believe it was a 25".... had speakers along both sides making it actually 29-30" wide.
