Converting RCA composite to S-Video
 

My aging, but working fine, 31" Hitachi has both RCA and S-Video inputs, but must have some kind of mechanical switch so that if S-Video is plugged in, even with no signal, the RCA is ignored. My reciever doesn't do conversion, and I still have about 3 sources that are composite, with all the new stuff even games using S-video.

Stinking current solution is that everything is connected using the composite RCA.

New clever plan is that I buy a couple or three of the cheap RCA to S-video adapters, and have indeed already won an auction on ebay for one of the deluxe bidirectional gold plated $9.99 wonders. This will get my feet wet, and frankly at the cost so what if it isn't that good.

Thats the question though, how good/bad is it relative to say;

Same looking dodad from Radio Shack that sells for $19.99?

Entech unit sold as Monster for $129 or so.

Radio Shack 4:1 switch unit with conversion?

Or some other fancy product I don't know of yet.

Three sources are Cheapo but fairly new Toshiba VCR, aging but working Pioneer LD700 laser disc, and working but barely used Sony HLF400 Beta VCR. The S-video input is a Kenwood VR410 receiver, then the TV.

Budget is modest, Maybe $100, since that is really pushing the cost of maybe a slightly newer laser player that includes Svideo output.

What might pry the most money out of me is some CLEVER solution that would plug into the TV S-video input, AND the VR410 so that I could easily just turn on say VCR and TV for simple viewing or power up the VR410 and get the HT treatment. OK, not holding my breath on this last bit, pretty sure it could be done, but I have serious quality/budget doubts.
