Progressive Scan Players
 

OK, so I just got a 51" HDTV last week, and I DEFINITELY have to upgrade my DVD player. It sounds like there are a number of affordable progressive scan players.

Unfortunately, I don't know much about the world of Digital television. It seems like you can get a good Sony or Panasonic PS player for around $200.

My question is this: What features should I be looking for, other than the obvious (component out, optical audio, etc.)?

Things I need help on are like 480 bpi (?) and pulldown technology.

Progressive scan DVD players will be 480p. You TV will most likely have 3:2 pull down built in (most commonly called "film" mode) but not all of them are good. Just stay away from the Pioneer 434 (if it's even sold anymore.

You should look for a progressive scan player with a high quality progressive chip like Silicon Image or Faroudja.

I have a Toshiba SD5700 which is a great DVD player for around $250. It has an excellent picture and contray to what you may read dose NOT have the chroma push error.

You can find out what type of chips players have by reading resources like the DVD Player Shootout or checking places like the DVD hardware section of the www.avsforum.com.

While the various makers change their models each year, many companies stick with the same chipset family. For example, the Panasonic RP-82 ($200) also has the Faroudja chip, which was used in the older model RP-56.

Any suggestions on a good multi-disc player? I've considered the SONY but I've heard that they are plagued with the Chroma issue.

The Panasonic CP72 ($220 at Crutchfield after a mail-in rebate) is 5 disc changer version of the RP-82 with the Sage/Faroudja chip and no Chroma issues. Info from Crutchfiled:

Does anyone know if the Panasonic CP72 plays SVCDs. I've read that the RP82 does, so I would think the CP72 would.

There are some CP72 owners over there who bought it because it comes in black and the 82 only comes in silver. -smile-

Has anyone heard any news on the Pioneer DV-656 Progressive Scan player????

I'm debating whether to get that or a Panasonic RP-62. The Panasonic seems to be the Progressive player everyone likes....my friends bought the Pioneer one, but he has not received it yet.

I'm also leaning towards the Panny because i can order it in BLACK, rather than that damn silver every other DVD player is in. I mean, what is with that silver crap anyways???? It wold look cool, if EVERYTHING else was silver (receiver and what not)
