Analog RPTV or HDTV?

I know this has probably been hacked through many times in this forum, but I figure I will ask about my specific situation and see what y'all think.

I am pondering the purchase of a 57" widescreen HDTV (Sony KP-57WS500) for my home. Would I be better off purchasing an analog TV (something like a Sony 55") and saving the $1000 for 2006? ;)

I mean right now I have regular analog cable, and an older (read ~3 yrs) DVD player with no progressive or R/Y/G.

I may upgrade the DVD player around Christmas (if necessary). I know my regular cable picture won't be great on the HDTV, but how bad is bad? Also, my viewing distance will be about 12' due to the crappy design of my living room, would that be too close for a 57"?

I know this is a lot of crap to cover but I am just trying to weigh my options before my purchase. Thank you all for your timely responses.

Think of it this way: A 50+" TV is something you are probably going to have in your home for a long time. Something that size isn't easily shuffled off to the spare room when you decide to upgrade to a new TV in a couple of years because you didn't get an HDTV the first time.
