Subwoofer Question
 

I got the polk audio handbook yesterday. when they talk about
subwoofers they say that its best to hook up the sub through the speaker terminals and then to the fronts because something about low pass filters. it says that the preamp output wont sound as good as turning the sub off on the reciever and sending the lfe to the fronts and subwoofer. is that true? i have a jbl pb10 and pioneer vsxd811s.

Yes, that is a totally viable option and is used frequently by those who don't like to use their processor/receiver's built in bass management. Some models have high crossover levels (my old Pioneer's lowest xover was 100(!), which means your running through the receivers xover, and then also have to adjust your sub's xover as well, and could have some overlap with your mains.
Running them full-range through the sub allows you to use only the sub's internal crossover, preventing overlap.

But will you still get LFE that way? or just the bass from the two fronts?

It's funny that I have the same receiver and polk. Polk does sound better with the setup they suggested. To answer your question about LFE, no, you don't get LFE that way. I have a separate sub for that so I ended up with 3 subs (one for the front, one for the surround back, and one for LFE).

Yes, you will, depending on how your receiver is set-up.
From what I remember abput the Pioneer, if you set the fronts to 'Large' and sub to 'No' all LFE will be routed to the front channels.

Yeap, then in the polk set up the L/R goes to the sub which gets the LFE and the sends the highpass to the sats.

Not sure why this would sound better unless they need an extra high crossover point and have designed the sub to fill the gap between 80 and the higher crossover point.

oy, sounds complicated.

I just set everything to small on the receiver and bypass the crossover on my sub (knob pull-out). My receiver X-over is at 80 so I sounds just fine........
