I just bought the futurama box set dvd, but I don't think my dvd players are region free. I have a toshiba dvd/cdrw combination drive, an xbox that plays dvd and a crappy genertic oriton or something.
Is there a way of finding out knowing if any of these will play region 2 dvds? Does anyone know?? |
Hello! A lot of Oritron's have a simple hack to make them region free. What are the model #'s of your players?
|
Model dvd650, what about the toshiba am I sol on that one?
|
For the dvd650 you should be able to use the standard Oritron hack:
Region Enablement: (with NO disc in player) MENU 1 6 7 (then specify the region code 1 through 6, or MUTE for region 0) This was taken from a website for dvd hacks. Most Chinese distributed players have some sort of hack or you can buy a mod chip. Better known players (Sony and Pioneer especially) usually require a major hardware upgrade that should be done by pro's. Give me the model # and I will check. I know of nothing to make an xbox region free (not to say that it can't be done, I just don't know how) BTW, all players bought in the USA (except for those spec. designed) are region 1. Another note: If you change the region on your Oritron to 0 (or region free) you will not be able to play some newer region 1 discs. I could explain if you want. Suffice to say that you should change it to watch Futurama, an then change it back to reg. 1. |
OK. I found a modchip for your XBox at http://www.modchip.com/xbox/index.shtml
They claim you can use a dongle with their chip for region free dvd watching. $49 for the chip, but all modchips void factory warranties... p.s. this thread probably will (and should) be moved to the international forum. |
Originally posted by Filmjester Model dvd650, what about the toshiba am I sol on that one? For instance, I found a hack for my Hitachi DVD-ROM Drive (which was region-protected...lame) so that I can change the Region of the drive anytime I want to play another region DVD. It just takes a second. Wonderful little program. Do some searching and you're bound to find a way to be able to hack the Toshiba drive, but you might not even need to, if the drive itself isn't Region-protected. (In which case you'd just need to use DVD Genie to tell your DVD-ROM software player to switch regions.) |
So I can't change it from region 1 to 2 watch the futurama dvd, and change it back to 1?
Or can I? And what about the toshiba? It said I can only change it a limited number of times, (4)or it will stay on the region, no matter what I do. Do Region 2 dvds play region1? |

If you haven't used a DVD kit on your xbox yet, supposedly you can buy a region 2 DVD kit and use that on it and it will set the xbox to region 2. Plus it is very good at converting PAL, won't void warranties, and I just trust this a lot more than some mod-chip. I'm in the process of trying that as we speak, just waiting for the kit and a region 2 DVD to arrive in the mail.

This is really more of a hardware question, so moving to DVD & HT Hardware.
If you don't get all the DVD-Rom related answers you want there, feel free to start a new thread in the Computer Hardware forum about your DVD-Rom drive. Moving thread. |
Great, now no one will reply

Sorry if I'm starting to p/o everyone To do this to your Oritron follow the steps I listed earlier. Just enter the numbers in the order I listed them with the door to your player open....I'll keep checking back to see if you got it. With your Oritron it's so easy there is no reason to spend any more money. Sorry I can't help with the Toshiba dvdrom drive. |
