6.1 or 7.1 receiver questions???

I and my friend have been looking to upgrade to one of these systems. I just had a few questions.....what are the best receivers out there that are capable of this?

Also, do you need a new DVD player to support this or is it all receiver decoded? I said it's all receiver, he said you need a new DVD player that supports THX or whatever....

Any opinions on this setup...is it worth it to go from 5.1 to 6.1 or 7.1?

Denon 5803

Onkyo 989

Yamaha RX-Z1

THX is an audio standard not an encoding method.

Is it worth it?

Do you have the room and the speakers to support it?

Your friend is wrong. If your DVD player has a digital output (they all do) and can pass a DTS signal (only first-generation machines had a problem with that, all current models are fine), the rest of the decoding is done in the receiver.

What are your current receiver models?

What are your price ranges for the new receivers?

(You mentioned two people)

I guess it's between two models right now....basically more my friend than me, i'm just curious because in the future i may upgrade....the two are

Kenwood VR-6070
&
Pioneer VSX-D811S

He can get them for about the same price...but he is a big pioneer whore....can't get enough of it.

The thing is Kenwood supposedly supports THX, which i kinda don't understand....isn't THX just some audio standard? Wouldn't it sound the same on both receivers?

Also, Pioneer is 7.1 upgradable....not sure about the other one.

Thanx for all the help

In theory no. Check the THX link I provided. Speakers can also be THX certified as well.

Ok, in "THEORY", but will someone please explain in actuality??? I mean will my Star Wars DVD (or other THX DVD) sound that much better with a THX certified system or will it sound just as good with a 6.1ES or EX system?

I guess my friend is looking to buy TODAY, so he wanted some input....and i'm just killing time at work

That is going to be very difficult to do. In order for THX to realize its potential not only does the equipment need to be certified but the room as well.

For the average person setting up a home theater I do not believe there will be a noticeable difference.

Again the question for you or him is do you have the speakers to support this? You are aware that 6.1 requires a rear center channel and 7.1 uses additional side channels.

Well, he works at Best Buy as a second job, so he will picking up speakers relatively soon. I honestly think that he is wasting his money, his room is not that big....however, he seems dead set on upgrading..just to have when he buys a new house or something.

I guess i'm just curious if there is a major difference between the two receivers in question and all the formats....trying to educate myself a bit.

thanx

THX is just a certification system. They review and certify that equipment meets a certain set of quality standards. It's like the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval. You can find the same quality or even better without THX, but having it should guarantee a certain level of quality and is good for peace of mind.

6.1 or 7.1 receiver questions

What you choose will really depend on your budget. There are a number of good options out there. I would look at Onkyo, Denon, Yamaha and Harmon Kardon as good places to start. I am most familiar with the Onkyo products and the new TX-SR600 is a very good 6.1 receiver. One of the most important considerations when you choose an A/V receiver is to choose one that has high current power. 100 watts is usually enough for most rooms, but there is a huge difference between high current amps and those that are not.

As for your DVD question, if your player is relatively new there will be no need to upgrade the DVD. All the information for 6.1 & 7.1 soundtracks is carrried as an extension to the rear surround channels on a 5.1 encoded disc so if your receiver supports it and your DVD player can decode DD and DTS you should be in good shape.

Good luck!
