Do DVD players need to be cleaned?

Dumb Question and I'm not sure if this has been asked before. My Zenith DVD Player seems to lock up on me and I was wondering if it needs to be cleaned periodically?

From what I've heard here, no. My (old) DVD player occasionally skips too...but I'm not quite sure what to do about it (besides buy a new one).

Oh, but DVD players should be cleaned frequently--dust is your chief enemy. At least wipe the player off with a soft cloth occasionally, and keep the thing as dust-free as possible.

Just be careful with dust and I think you'll be fine. I've had a DVD player for 3 years and have yet to clean it or have a problem with it. My second DVD player is a year old and haven't had any problems with it either.

The best thing to do is clean every dvd that you are going to view with Dawn Dish detergent first to get rid of the greasy finger prints and dust..and please do not dry it with paper towels, this will scratch your DVD movies.

Be careful with even Dawn as this has some level of abbrasives that can scratch the DVD or CD. Usually a rince under cold water and wipe dry with a soft, non-lint cloth does the trick.

I do agree with ZX83 that cleaning the DVD or CD is usually the best procative measure since more and more people have DVD players now and the rental frequency has risen drastically.

It sounds like I need to buy a new one or check for upgrades. I used a dvd that freezes in my dvd player and found out it works fine in my friends dvd player. Thanks for all the input.
