KLH Subwoofer - Decent for the $$?

I saw a KLH subwoofer (ASW10-100C
) at Best Buy yesterday for $99. I'm having trouble justifying $300+ for a sub, so I was wondering if any forum users had that particular KLH sub

IMHO, no.

I would rather have no sub than a bad one. The effect will detract from the overall sound if the sub cannot play low enough or loud enough without distortion.

My son got one. It burned out after a little more than a year.

When it did, I took a little look around inside to see if I could fix it. Cheap 1/2 inch fiberboard, one thin pad of polyfill, 18 gauge wiring, and a melted piece of circuit board where the amp used to be.

Save an extra 50 bucks or so and get something else. Or, better yet, just build your own. The biggest bang-for-the-buck DIY project you can do, IMHO.

Any idea where I can get plans for such a project?

DO NOT GET A KLH SUB. EVER.
Mine busted the woofer after 2 years. i wasn't even playing it
loud. it was always a crap subwoofer anyways, so when it
broke I picked up a JBL PB10. 300 at best buy. save the money
and get that instead. its one of the best subs you can get for 300.
It goes pretty deep and it sounds clean. it looks real nice too. it don't look cheap like the klh. and it is downfiring too.
try watching the movie called titan ae on a KLH. it stinks. It pops
and flaps even with the volume turned all the way down.

Just spend 20 minutes at www.partsexpress.com. you'll find eveything you need to know, and the parts to boot.

Couldn't agree more.

Spend the money for a decent sub.

When I bought my HT system (all though it isnt anything extremely top of the line) I had the choice to buy a cheap Kenwood subwoofer but didn't. My system sounds great without it IMO... maybe I'll get one eventually but it isn't on my priorities list.

My advice is stay away from KLH at all costs. They are crap, plain and simple. I'm not an audiophile with thousands to spend on speakers by any stretch of the imagination, but I've never heard a KLH product that didn't sound horrible.

If you've got $99 and need a sub now, look at buying one of the lower watt Sony's. Not the best by any means, but leaps and bounds beyond the KLH.

JandR has the pb10 sub for $199 with free shipping and no tax. I just ordered one.

The Sony one that is $200 at Best Buy had quite a cult following for a while. I have one and I'm pretty happy with it...Sony actually made something worthwhile! It's like an SAWM40 or something similar.

I would second the Sony. The one I've heard comes with their HTIB that has a seperate receiver and dvd changer and it sounded pretty good to me. I swear I saw it for $100 by itself maybe in a GoodGuys ad. The whole setup receiver/dvd changer/speakers runs $599, so $200 sounds like a lot.

Here's a decent link to a selection of subwoofers at Etronics.
http://www.etronics.com/listproducts...bwoofer&store=

They have the Sony SA-WM40 people were talking about for $150, and a smaller 50 watt 8 inch one for $80. That $150 one looks like a good deal considering what people have said in this thread.

They also have the JBL PB10 for $187.99 along with a lot of other brands
