Is it OK to plug in devices into receiver outlet?

I have a Pioneer 850 and it has a power outlet at the back for plugging in devices. Is it safe to use that outlet? I do have a surge protector that the 850 is connected to, but I'm concerned about what damage the 850 and the other device might cause to each other. Specifically I'm talking about the Malata dvd player which doesn't have a hard off switch; so if I plug it into the receiver, it'll turn off when I turn off the receiver. Any thoughts?

Try to avoid it if at all possible. Something as low powered as a DVD player should be ok though.

There should be a power limit printed near the outlet. Just stay below that and you'll be fine.
