Will most dvd players convert PAL to NTSC?

I want to get a dvd that was just released by one of my favorite artists but it is in the PAL format. It is region free, so I do not have to worry about that problem. I am just wondering if most players will play the PAL dvd?

I have read that only the cheap players will not do the conversion for you so that you can watch the dvd... is this right?

I do not believe that any player from a major manufacturer wil do this conversion.

You need a specialty player for this.

The main thing is to make sure your TV can handle both formats, then it does'nt matter what your DVD player is putting out.In my experience, most players will pump out PAL signal with a PAL disc, and NTSC when you play an NTSC disc.I'd suggest trying a PAL VHS,(virtually every VCR is multi-format),and see if your TV handles it.

I am sure that my TV can not play PAL video, it is nice, but not that nice. That is why I was hopeing for a dvdplayer that would convert the signal to NTSC.

I have read that the XBox will do it, but I want to see if a set top player will do it.

I do not believe the XBox will perform any conversion.

Here is a link with an answer to your question.

The United States is not a PAL-friendly country. Our televisions will not display PAL, and most DVD players from major brands will not convert the signal to NTSC.

You will have to specifically hunt out a player that does the PAL-to-NTSC conversion. I recommend the Malata DVD-N996 or DVD-520. Please see the numerous threads about these players in the International Forum.

Yep, Josh hit the nail on the head. make sure you stick with the Malata or a couple of special JVC all code models, since most of the cheap all-code players that say they convert NTSC to PAL can't do it without some distortion. I picked up a Daewoo 3000 and while it will play PAL discs on my NTSC 16x9 TV the anamorphic picture is squished a little.

Where did you come up with this? The majority of VCRs are most certainly not multi-format.

benjsimpson lives in New Zealand. VCRs there may be multi-format, but certainly not in the United States.
