My player just went phut!Any suggestions before I shell out for a new one?

I've got a Phillips 840 multizone...that will spin DVDs but keeps telling me to check the disc and refuses to read any of the many I tried.Strangely it plays CDs fine.Is it the case that DVD players have a seperate lens for CDs and DVDs?

Is it usually cheaper to get a whole new player than to replace the lens?

I've even gone to the point of opening up the casing to see if there was grit on the lens, but that does'nt seem to have helped. It is about two years old,and has played thousands of discs in that time, but i was hoping I could get it to last a little longer.

It was going to be The Purple Rose Of Cairo (Woody Allen) tonight...but the old player isn't playing ball. Grrr

I'm leaving it unplugged for 24 hours to see whether it's condensation on the lens or something...but any suggestions would be appreciated.

Some do, some don't. Depends on the player. I'm not sure about your Philips.
