Sharp's Mini Home Theater System. Does DD and DTS??
HI guys,
I just picked up Sharp's Mini Home Theater for $149 at Sears because I wanted to have surround sound in my bedroom. So for such a low price I figured what the hell, why not!?
Well, I got it home and I was setting it up and noticed that the display had a "dts" label on the front display. Well, I did some tinkering and once I hooked it up I popped in Gladiator and selected the DTS track and whattya know, IT PLAYED!? I was totally dumbfounded! The system is only 210 watts, and bought it for the cheap price and Dolby Digital features but DTS was unexpected. So, just to be sure I popped in The Emperors New Groove into my dvd player and selected the dts track and it played it too!
Just thought I'd share this nice little find with the rest of you. This is the FIRST time I ever seen a mini system with such a low price have dts decoding features and NOT be listed as a feature.
here is a link for more info on the unit. Also, it DOESN'T have an optical output at all...only an INPUT.
Mini System
Sears still has them for $149

I'm sure it's a fine bedroom system, but I have to really question that power rating.
Rating power output for a 1 kH tone at 10% THD is incredibly pathetic, to say the least. I'd even go so far as to say that a power rating becomes absolutely useless given these criteria. Of course, like any other real-world system, how loud it plays and how it sounds while it does it is all that matters.
Front Spker (Main): FTC 30w min. RMS per channel at 8 ohms (1 kHZ, 10% THD)
Subwoofer: 40w per channel at 6 ohms (100 Hz, 10%THD)
Center Spker: 30w at 6 ohms (1 kHz, 10%THD)
Surround Spker: 20w per channel at 8 ohms (1 kHz, 10% THD)
Subwoofer: 40w per channel at 6 ohms (100 Hz, 10%THD)
Center Spker: 30w at 6 ohms (1 kHz, 10%THD)
Surround Spker: 20w per channel at 8 ohms (1 kHz, 10% THD)

Yeah, you are right. It's not a very great system in terms of specs, I am sure but it does sound nice overall. I switched between DD and DTS back and forth and the DTS tracks have a bit more "depth" to them. For the money, I cant complain at all though. My room is very small and sometimes I just watching my movies in bed
