Progressive Scan DVD Player Suggestions for this setup...
 

I'm looking for a new DVD player, preferably a pro-scan DVD Player. I've read some stuff on the subject, but figured I'd ask to get some specific opinions. I currently have a Tosh 57HX81 TV, hooked up with component cables via my relatively old Tosh 2109 DVD Player. This DVD Player is being moved upstairs, so I'm looking for a new replacement downstairs. I'd like to keep cost down, but I'm flexible since I mine as well try to get the best picture I can for a reasonable price (though the Tosh has a nice line doubler).


Additionally, just curious, but do any of you know if certain players have problems with subtitles? For instance the Spy Game DVD has the automatic subtitles on my Tosh, but not my PS2. I know toshiba were of a particular problem with these discs, but have the latest models fixed this?

What's your budget? Personally, I like the RP-91 from Panasonic. It doesn't have the chroma bug problem that a lot of players do. It puts out an incredible picture, but it is a bit pricey if you're on a budget.

I don't know. I don't have a firm bidget per say. But I figure I'll spend a few hundred on it. I guess I'd like to get some options from around $300-$500 or so.

I guess I should add, if you know of good places to buy any recommended players, that would be helpful as well.

Panasonic RP62 (new) is only $175 and carries a prog scan chip with Faroudja's DCDi technology which is a very good chip.

I have one of the new RP62s, it's a great player at a great price, BUT it does not do auto scaling on non-anamorphic DVDs... I'm not too familiar with the Toshiba set... If it locks into full mode when being fed a progressive source then you'll have to do scaling with the set. Won't matter if all you view is anamorphic 16X9 but it's something to consider if you have many non-anamorphic discs...

JVC makes a player in the same price range that does the auto scaling, but I can't comment on it as I have not used it... I'm pretty sure that JVC players are chroma bug free.

You might be able to get a RP 91 for around $500 if you look around... I've heard nothing but very, very good things about that player and it WILL do the auto scaling from what I've read...

The new line of Toshiba PS players are quite nice. :up:

Grab the 62, if you don't need the scaling. I looked at it and the JVC and liked the 62 better.

Another alternative is the Denon 1600 with a tweaked RP-56 video section if you want DVD-A:

The RP82 should be out soon, and is reputed to have scaling (though no one knows for sure quite yet). It should be $50 more than the RP62. It also has DVD-A, and of course, the same Faroudja deinterlacing chip.
