From what I've heard, jandr.com and onecall.com are pretty good retailers. I just bought an Onkyo TX-SR600 from Onecall for $429.10.
Crutchfield.com has a really good site for comparing receivers too.

crutchfield is the best for service but you really take a hit with the price sometimes, I order all my stuff with them and then price match it with a store i find on shop.yahoo.com, Even though AMEX blue stopped pricematching the gold card and other cards that require an annual fee still allow price matching.

Kind of on the same topic as the first post; can someone point me in the direction of a site where I can learn more about A/V receivers. Currently I have a Sharp ProLogic receiver that I got for about $130 from buy.com. I'm absolutely sure this receiver is nowhere close to what I can get from a newer receiver.

Thx nekobus. Now I have a question about a specific receiver. The Pioneer VSXD811S looks like a good deal, has good reviews, has good amount of inputs for my needs (wish it had more bandwidth for component switching though and another component input as well but I can live without it) and has a ton of features including DTS-ES discrete if I'm not mistaken. What else would I need beside the receiver? Do I need an amplifier as well? It's probably a stupid question, but I'm really new to this. Thx

Keep in mind too that some manufacturers won't honor the warranty unless you buy from an authorized dealer. Most manufacturers maintain a list of authorized dealers on their Web sites.
