Have players gotten much better in past two years?

I have Toshiba SD-1600 and am considering upgrading. I know a number of new players will play SVCD's. That would be a nice format as a cheap alternative for family video, at least untill DVD comes down in price.
Anything else to be gained by upgrading?

progressive scan output, DVD-A and SACD, auto-scaling for 16x9 displays...

If all you are looking for is basic DVD playback on a 4x3 display, then you won't be wowed by the current crop of players compared to your current tosh 1600

If you want SVCD playback, be sure to check www.vcdhelp.com to make sure the player you plan on getting is listed
