What's a good compromise?

I'm getting real tired of my 10-year old 27" Zenith and I want to upgrade now. However, I'm not ready to invest in a RPTV or even in the HDTV price range.
I'm wondering if anybody has experience or knows of an up to a 36" set they'd recommend as a transition DVD watching set that would eventually turn into an auxiliary set.
Thanks.
Joel

You can get a Samsung HDTV for under $1000, it is only 27", buy it is HD.

I agree that Samsung is the place to start looking-they have just released new models with a lower price and more features. The one listed at Amazon is an old model. The new one is only $800 at both Onecall and Bestbuy (BB starting next month).

I just used amazon as a quick reference as it looks like Best Buy no longer carries Samsung.

I wish I worked for amazon, I'd be making more money that I am now and able to afford my Anthem amps I want and my Paradigm Studio 60's that I want.

They still do, but the new models aren't due at BB for another 3 weeks or so and then they will start to show up online and in stores.

I guess I'm looking for recommendations for a larger set non-HD, I guess, than the same size HD.
Samsung any good?

Check out the Toshiba 36A61. It has the best 36" picture I've seen in your price range.
