In my setup in gives me more even distribution of bass.
With 2 subs I can sit in various positions and still hear good bass.
When I had one sub there was a single sweet spot and I never got that spot

I was thinking of doing dual subs but hanging one off a different channel like the center as it seems the center gets a lot of bass.

I have the LFE split and running to a 2 channel power amp that powers 2 passive subs.
One sub is in the right front corner facing toward the center of the room, and the other is on the opposite wall about 3/4 of the way to the back of the room facing in.

My HT is over 4000 cubic feet, with vaulted ceilings and two large openings to other rooms. There isn't a single sub on the market that could handle that chore alone.
So while the Sony sub or other single subs with small drivers may be sufficient for apartment dwellers or those who don't 'need all that bass'... for the rest of us bottom dwellers, multiple subs are the way to go.
And hell, it's just more fun to tweak
