I listen to both along with the VR-950's and VR-940's. I ended up going with the VR-940's and a quality sub. The built in powered subs do not sound good and I am not a fan of built in powered subs just because of that. You are going to get much better bass by buying a external powered sub. I ended going with the VR-940's then over the VR-950's due to the 940's just sounding better. The 950's didn't seem to add much, just another speaker and were louder which I actually think hurt the sound. I currently have VR-940's for my front and rears and don't regret the purchase, for the price range they are some really great sounding speakers. It is pretty much the same for the 965's and the 975's. The 975's just comes with more/bigger speakers.

I have a pair of the 970s from 2 years ago, similar to the 975s. The bass is just as good as a powered sub, it's thick and deep. Plus you actually have two subs because each speaker contains an amp and sub. Go to www.bostonacoustics.com to see the differences between the speakers. I personally would not reccommend the 940s. They actually use a car speaker for the midrange. The two mids in the 950s and 975s sound much better to me. The 950s are the same as the 975s w/o the subs.
I use 970s for the front and 950s for the rear.

Main differences:
975 125 watt amp with 10 inch sub, 2 mids, 1 tweeter.
965 80 watt amp with 8 inch sub, 1 mid, 1 tweeter.

Of course, you must listen to them for yourself to decide.

I compared a pair Energy speakers (don't remember which model)
to the VR965's at the same store. While I thought the two were simular sounding, the 965's had a much cleaner sound in my opinion. Both pairs were priced the same.
