Ideal placement for speakers and sub

Where is the ideal placement for speakers? --approx. how many inches/feet from the tv? We also have a 10" subwoofer. Since it is non-directional, I assume it doesn't matter where you place it. But doesn't have to be parallel or perpendicular to the wall?

Right now, the way we have it setup, it's at an angle in a corner. It makes the sub sound like it DOES have a direction.

Check out this guide from crutch field. It had speaker placement a way into it.
