Oritron and Macro -- not a question!
 

I was fiddling around last night and decided to try an experiment. Oritron has claimed that the macrovision can be defeated on their players, but won't say how. I have waited and waited for somebody to hack this thing, but to no avail. So last night I wondered just what exactly macrovision looks like when you try to tape a DVD (I want to do this since my kids are scratching the hell out of the ones I buy for them). So I hooked the DVD to the VCR through just two of the RCA jacks. And I taped. It wasn't great quality (of course, it's not going to be), but I could not find any sign of the macrovision. I tried several discs from several studios and found nothing. Could it be that the macro isn't there in the first place? Or is it just a fluke that maybe my VCR won't detect it? Any thoughts here? Or does anybody else care?

How old is your VCR. What is your VCR?

It's a Magnavox with a manufacture date of April 1994. Damn, I didn't realize that it was that old! I can't see anything that jumps out as a model number. Could it be because it is older? Maybe it's because I have the VCR sitting up on its side? -wink-

It may be too old to be affected by the MV.

X is probably right. The DVD player may be sending the MV signal, but if the VCR does not know what to do with it, then it won't. MV on VCR's is a funny thing. I had a JVC that I bought in 1989! and just replaced last spring after 11 years of rugged service. That VCR used MV and I couldn't dub from VCR or DVD with it. The cheap Quasar Hi-Fi VCR I replaced it with for $60 supposedly had MV as well, but so far I've seen no sign of it from taping various DVD's.

My theory is that there must be a slight difference in the way MV gets outputted on a VCR than on a DVD player. All VCR's understand the MV output by another VCR, but not all VCR's seem to understand the MV output by a DVD player.

Thanks for the thoughts guys! Maybe I should have saved the $70 I just spent on an Apex so that I could tape the kids' movies. Oh well, I wanted a second player for the bedroom anyway. We'll just keep that little secret from Mrs. Abob!
