DVD Player Recommendation under $200?

Hello,

I am looking to purchase a DVD player for under $200 (a gift). It doesn't need to have progressive scan or anything too fancy. Component video and Dolby Digital built in would be a plus, but not necessary.

Just need a good/reliable hardware manufacturer recommendation.

Thanks for your help.

Go with the Panasonic RP56. You do get one of the best progressive scan deinterlacers with it and it still fits your price requirements. It is also compatible with MP3's, as well as DVD+RW disks.

Are you sure you need a Dolby Digital decoder built in?

Most of us like to have our receivers do the Dolby Digital and the DTS decoding.

Probably not. I guess they will listen through the TV for now until they get their own mini-home theater setup. So, no Dolby Digital required.

Any recommendations?

Thanks.

My $.02 worth

Hi Gossamer,

I am looking at some JVC players and have come accross this deal:

JVC XV-S60BK slim-line progressive scan player for $179.99 shipped from vanns.com

I am looking for JVC specifically because the rest of my HT setup is JVC. This model has progressive scan, s-video and component outputs, digital coax and optical for audio output, and a glow multibrand remote. The reviews I have read have been favorable.

If you are looking at some other brands, you might want to try looking at vanns (http://www.vanns.com) as they are having a 10% off sale until 2/17 and ship for FREE. I am NOT affiliated with Vanns in any way excpet for being a consumer who has purchased from them - good friendly service, good prices, and they are an authorized JVC dealer.
Don't just take a stranger;s word for it though, check their prices against others with price searches like http://www.pricegrabber.com or http://www.streetprices.com

Good luck - I hope you find a good deal on a player that suits your needs!
