At $200 you can't go wrong with the Sony. One of the best bargins in audio. It's a bit boomy but just add polyfill to tighten it up.

If you can spend a bit more (about $270), check out the JBL PB12. I compared/listened to both and liked the JBL better. IMO the JBL does better with both movies and music. It's also looks to have better build quality and uses binding posts as opposed to the standard wire clips used by the sony SAWM40.

Check out other opinions/reviews here:

I have no other suggestions in that price range but I have that Sony sub and I don't think you can do better for your money in that price range. I use my system primarily for home theatre in a room that's not overly large but I'm very pleased with the performance.

For reference here is a big discussion we had about a year ago this time regarding the Sony sub.

For $200 you can't go wrong with the Sony. It is probably the best bargain in home audio right now.

I have had this sub for about a year and love it. Got it from Sears after a nice price matching and some delays for slow shipment.

Ditto all the above sentiment as I am also a completely satisfied owner of the SA-WM40 Sony subwoofer.

Does Sears still sell the Sony sub?

I don't really need another sub, I already have two, but I have $150 in gift card money at Sears and with all the buzz the past year I want to check out the sub, maybe I will be pleasently surprized at the sound!

Where is a good place to price match it at?

Thanks

Sears still sells the Sony Sub. It's $199.99 Click Here

Lowest price I could find on-line is $172.77 from Love4Digital. Click Here

Thanks

Does it have to be in stock at a etailer for Sears to PM?

I found it at Etronics.com for $140

Also, weren't there some mods to make the sub sound better. Polyfill and other mods?

Thanks

I did the pricematch method with Sears on the Sony sub about a year ago. I'm not sure if they still do it with Inet retailers but you can try. It can be variable from store to store. They also usually tack on shipping charges to the price before they match.

I used inetshopping.com when I pricematched. They still have it listed at $129 but it is out of stock. http://www.inetshopping.com/audios/speakers.html

Its really going to depend on the Sears as to how they go about price matching. I brought in a print out from inet that didn't include the shipping costs. The saleswoman did nothing to confirm whether the sub was in-stock or if inet was even a real web site. I'm sure this is not standard procedure considering how easy it would be to create a web site listing a very good price. When you go in for your price match have print outs for the price with and without shipping. If your lucky you'll be able to save some extra money.

Why do you need to buy spikes? Mine sits on the carpet quite nicely and doesn't move at all.

You don't need spikes if it is on carpet...they have no use on carpet. The poly fill does help but just play around with the amout until you get the sound you like. You can get the poly fill at any crafts store. I also suggest you get some sounds files of frequency spectrum bites like 30Hz, 25Hz, etc. Just go on Morpheus or something and search for "bass". Or use Video Essentials.

Really? I was under the impression that the spikes were specifically for carpet. In fact, at places like StudioTech, they refer to them as "carpet spikes".

They are for carpet. I would hate to see the effect of spikes on a nice hardwood floor. Ouch.
