receivers w/ video switching?
 

does the onkyo 595 have video switching? from component, s-video and composite?

any models in this range have it?

i have a s-video and component to the receiver, receiver to the tv w/ component video. does it convert the s-video to the tv? or do i need svideo to tv also?

The receiver will only switch the video source that is connected to it.

So if you have 2 different sources connected to your receiver, 1 being s-video and the other component, then you need to have an s-video and component cables going to your receiver. The receiver will not convert s-video to component or visa-versa. I don't know of any receivers that will do that.

No, the Onkyo 595 can't do that. I've never heard of that feature before.

ok, which receiver has like 3 component video inputs?

let's see dvd player, ps2, xbox or gamecube, etc... i'd like to use the component whenever possible.

The Denon 4802 has 3 component video inputs.

Some receivers will convert composite to s-video, but I don't believe any convert anything to component.

There are 5 receivers that will convert composite and s-video to component:

Kenwood Sovereign 5090
Kenwood Sovereign 5700
Kenwood Sovereign 5900
Pioneer Elite VSX-49TX

and Denon's upcoming AVR5803 (very very soon to be released). Alas, the $800 upgrade to the AVR5800 does not include this function.

None other that I know will. There are some high end preamp/processors that will too, such as Anthem's AVM-20.

I'm looking for the same sort of thing, and these are the only ones my research has turned up. If anyone knows of one cheaper than the Sovereign 5090, I'd love to know.

Another option would be going with something like the Silicon Image DVDO Iscan Pro. That has S-video and Component (interlaced only) inputs which it converts to progressive VGA (and acts as a doubler). It can then be converted to component via a VGA -> Component converter.

ah, thanks for the info. my current hk receiver's manual sort of implied that such a feature would exist (but of course, i would need to buy a higher end one).

i haven't looked into any of the models listed but i assume that they are quite expensive. thanks.

also, i noticed that a kenwood model has more than 1 component video inputs. i saw it in a crutchfield catalog. i don't think it was too expensive.

Composite to S-video conversion
 

Radio Shack now sells two a/v switchers that will convert between S-video and composite - both ways - though the quality of an original composite signal will not be improved. It will allow you to hook up multiple S-video and composite devices and run either/both S-video and composite signals into your monitor or A/V receiver.

The 4 input x 2 output model sells for $59.95 and the 6 input x 2 output model sells for $149.95. Both feature "learning" remote control.

The cheapest one would be that Kenwood Sovereign 5090. It runs about $1300. The 5700 runs about $1600 and the 5900 runs just over $1800.

The pioneer is $2500 and the Denon retails for $4300, but should be in the $3x00 range when it comes out.

The iScan Pro is about $700, but can be purchased for $500 or so.

Composite to S-Video is the easy part. S-Video to Component is rare.
