Question re: "16x9 Enhanced Mode" on 4x3 TV

After reading on here about the 27" Akai TV's at Sam's Club I went and bought one. One of the reasons I wanted it was because of the "Enhanced 16x9 mode." As I thought I understood it, this meant that anamorphic DVDs would have a higher resolution because it just didn't waste scan lines on the black bars. So, the actual Aspect Ratio should be unchanged. However, when I switch to "wide" mode it actually squishes the picture and makes everyone look short and fat. Is that the way it's supposed to work? Is that way it is on a Wega? Or, is it just that way because it's a cheap brand?

I believe the one step you're missing is changing your dvd player's video output to "16x9". This is done through the setup menu.

Oh! Thanks! I totally forgot about that.

Now if I could just get my component video cables to work right I'd be set.

What's wrong with your component cables?

Nevermind. When I went into the setup menu to set it to 16x9 I found the "Set Video Out: S-Video; YUV" menu and it was set to S-Video. I switched it to YUV and everything's great now.
