which is better..pioneer or sony? (receivers and dvd players)

Hi, i was wondering which is better

pioneer's dvd player or sony dvd players? i was looking at pioneer 444 and a few others...

pioneer receivers or sony receivers? i was looking at pioneer elite series comparing with the sony de975 1075 etc...

i need suggestion on what to buy... here is my budget

receiver - $400
dvd player - $250 (that supports dvd,vcd,cd/cdr/cdrw, mp3 if possible)

i was looking also at 'polk audio's' speakers, i would also like some recomendation on what speakers to buy (a set if possible, don't really want to buy seperate)

IMHO this is as much personal preference as anything else.

In your price range I believe they will be very similar although I like and use Sony ES products.

personally, for receivers in that price range, I'd suggest you take a look at Onkyo (either the 494 or the 595).

Or Denon. I prefer Onkyo and Denon over Sony and Pioneer any day. That is of course my opinion.

Agreed

Marantz is also a good choice!

ahadi,

I agree that the decision between Pioneer and Sony is mainly personal preference. That being said, I will soon own both brands of receivers. I have been using a Sony DB 930 for a couple of years now and love everything about it except the remote. I just ordered a Pioneer VSXD850S Surround Sound Receiver from Onecall because I needed/wanted a second system in my house.

Similarly, I have a Pioneer DVD player and a Sony ES CD changer and I am happy with both.

Check out the Pioneer at Onecall. It on sale for $299 or ~$320 shipped (fedex 3 day). The URL is http://ww2.onecall.com/PID_11423.htm

WDEagle!

P.S. In my main system I am using a combination of vintage and newer Polk speakers. I auditioned them against such systems as the Energy Take 5 and Klipsch quintets. The polk sounded much better to both my wife and I. I plan on using Paradigm speakers with my second system due to space constraints.
