widescreen dvd on older square tv....is there

any way to watch the dvd in full screen, instead of having bars top & bottom? In the future, I will upgrade my tv, but for now I would just like to be able to watch dvd's on this tv without the bars.........Is there anyway to do this? Do the dvd players adjust the picture?

The answer is very close

But I would recommend that you focus on the movie, and not the black bars. My experience over 20 years of this is that most people get used to the black bars and eventually appreciate that they are seeing the entire movie as it was shown in a theater.

Most of us prefer to see the whole picture, but if you'd prefer to fill your screen at the expense of some image lost on the sides you can turn the "zoom" feature on your DVD player on. Most players do this.

I can honestly say that the bars never bothered me at all, and I only have a 27" set. I am just happy to be able to see the whole movie the way it was shown in the theaters.

Watch the movie in the dark, and move closer, you won't see them within 5 minutes

I second that. Originally it bugged me greatly (I have a 27"). However, once you get into the film or watch for a few minutes, you totally loose track that the bars are even there.

I have a 25" tv and have no problem with the black bars. It also helps to turn your brightness down a bit so the bars are truly black and not glowing grey. That will really help, especially with the lights down.

A lot of movies will still have black bars, even on a widescreen TV. Look into aspect ratios in the forum's Newcomer Help thread. Basically, what's important is to watch the movie the way it was made, regardless of whether there are black bars or not.

Black bars are awesome! I love the black bars! The black bars tell me, "Hey, you're getting the whole picture - not some chopped up piece of crap."

Black bars can be really fun. Talk to them. Tell them you are thankful they are there. And for goodness sakes don't zoom or disfigure the image in any way! Just get to know the black bars. They can be very enjoyable once you get to know them.
