- JBL SCS-135 5.1 speaker system with subwoofer, factory refurbished with full warranty, $277: http://www.harmanaudio.com/search_br...umber=SCS135-Z
- Harman/Kardon AVR110 DD/dts receiver, factory refurbished with full warranty, $270: http://www.harmanaudio.com/search_br...er=AVR%20110-Z
- Acoustic Research 3' optical Toslink interconnect, $15: at CC or BB
- Acoustic Research 25' subwoofer interconnect cable, $20: at CC or BB
- 50' 16ga speaker wire: $10 at Home Depot
- Difference left over from $600 budget: send directly to me
Look at my signature and you'll see that the above equipment is quite similar to what I run at home. Yes, I bought my receiver at harmanaudio.com and quite happy with it. Yes, the receiver was refurbished and no problems. No, you could not tell the difference from new (I imagine it was simply a returned item that they can not sell as new).

Hmm, I'd probably try for something like this.
Speakers: JBL NSP 1 speaker package (fronts, rears, center) around $250
Subwoofer: Sony SA-WM 40, $170 shipped (etronics.com)
Receiver: A refurbished Onkyo 494 from uBid.com is amazing at around 175-200ish shipped. I have one and it's like new.
It you don't want to buy refurb, also look into a Kenwood VR-507 at around $250.
That puts you at about $600
Add some 12-16 gauge speaker wire from Home Depot, pick up a 20 dollar coaxial cable, and you're at $650 tops.
Good luck with the new system,

Receiver: Refurbed Onkyo 484 or 494. $150-200
Speakers: PSB Alpha A/V's or Alpha Mini's $550-600 w/sub $375-$450 without
Sub (unless purchased above, which I recommend): Sony WM-40 $150
Total around $700, but well worth the extra money in my opinion.
