Need help on setting up home theater.....

I just bought my first home theater system, and I have a newbie question.

My dvd player is not attached, and I'm not sure if I have the ability to utlize 5.1. My manual tells me to look for "Coaxial, or Optical Output"...however the back of my DVD player has the following jacks...

Bitstream
PCM
Analog
S
CR
CB
Y

I'm new to this, so any help is appreciated.

What kind of dvd player do you have?

Every dvd player has a digital output, so you just have to figure out which one is yours, and which format it is (coaxial or optical).

You can rule out the following:

Analog - this is the analog (non-digital) audio output, and should be a stereo (L&R) pair

S - this is the s-video video output

CR - this is part of the component video output
CB - this is part of the component video output
Y - this is part of the component video output

If I had to guess, I'd say that there is one jack that is labeled Bitstream/PCM, and that's the one you want to use. If you list what kind of player you have, and/or describe the Bitstream/PCM jack, we'll figure this out.

You may be right, you may be wrong.

The bitstream/pcm connection might be optical. We don't have enough information right now.

My DVD player is a Toshiba SD-2109.

I'm guessing the bitstream outlet is the key...
