Do you have to return the card to DirectTV after you cancel service?

Do you have to return the card to DirectTV after you cancel service?

I was looking at their contract, it says that you have to return the card to them if you cancel service, or they will charge you $150.

Does anybody know of this?

What about Dish Network, do they require that you return the card? (I will be canceling Dish pretty soon as I like the mixed English - Spanish language package on DirectTV a little better, plus I can get a "free" system).

I didn't see that, know that, or do that when I cancelled DirecTV. I never got charged anything either.

I looked into this a little more. I guess that DirectTV now requires new customers to agree to return the smart card if they ever leave DirecTV, or pay a fee, something like $150. In the past they didn't require this.

Say you buy a receiver without a card, and you need a card to get started. DirectTV will charge you $20 to get a new card.

I suppose that the point is moot, if Dish Network buyout of Hughes (thus DirectTV) goes through, either new equipment or new cards would be required anyway.
