dvd player or pc upgrade

well its all a bit confusing, should I stick to a stand alone dvd player [what brand under $600 australia] to play dvd-r dvd-rw and mp3] or should I upgrade my computer which has at moment sblive sound card and if this is an option were do I start.helppppp.
