There a lot of brands out there that are quite good. I would take a close look at Monitor Audio in that price range http://www.monitoraudio.com/ along with Axiom's Millenia M22 (mail order only though) http://www.axiomaudio.com/

personally, I'm a fan of both the B&W 602 Series 2 and the Paradigm Reference Series Studio 20.
The best thing you can do is go to audio shops in your town with several CDs you know well and listen extensively. Any audio shop worthy of your business will let you take your time while making a decision.

One thing I forgot to add which should be noted is that normally a good audio store will let you upgrade your speakers within a year and apply the purchase price of the prior pair towards a new one. Normally, the new pair must be twice as expensive as the old one, but it's a good thing to keep in mind when shopping.

This is a hard one... there are a LOT of very good speaker in this price range. You might still be able to find some NHT Super Twos on closeout (~500-600), Canadian offerings from Paradigm, PSB, Axiom, etc are always a good choice too. One brand you don't hear of very much that I have been impressed with has been Phase Technology. This is esentially a brand of a speaker "parts" maker... they have a couple of patents (including one on a Soft dome tweeter which is used in their speakers). Onecall.com has the Teatro 7.5vdt's on clearance for $190 each (in Rosewood only... you have to pay full price if you want black). At that price I think they are a steal.

I agree on the B&W 602 speakers...however youll only be able to snag front speakers for 500-600, and I believe he wants a surround sound setup? I cant wait to order my B&W 601's 602's CC6, and sub

Check out this 4T review: http://www.stereophile.com/showarchives.cgi?330
It's a fun read. I love the bit about he and his wife in the kitchen with Louie Armstrong.

Best speakers for $500-$600
I would personally get 3 pairs of SuperOne's. 3 upfront (L/C/R) and then 3 more for the side and rear (LS/CS/RS). If costs are even more stringent I would swap out the rear speakers with the less expensive SuperZero's.
Near future upgrades would have to be a Power Subwoofer (NHT SubOne).

Another vote for the 602's. I used to use them as my main fronts and was very pleased with them. I've since moved up to a pair of Nautilus 804's and use the 602's as rear channels.

Missing the point...
I think the person originally stated that they were looking for a COMPLETE system and NOT just a pair. If you can get (5) B & W speakers for $500-$600 then please advise, as I will rent a Uhaul and clear out the warehouse at that price.
If it's a cost no concern type thing, then put my vote in for any pair of Wilson Audio...Most notably the Grand Slamms.

"This is for complete pair of speakers, and not just a left or a right." and later,
"Nope, just fronts for now. I'll complete the set once I have some more money."
He also mentions up to a $600 limit.

Unclear...
Obviously the ORIGINAL post was unclear and ambigious... It's still a little unclear. The wording "complete pair", is either redundant or poorly phrased.
Put my vote down for any of the Wilson Audio series also.

Thanks Brian Shannon, that figures I live in the country and would have to drive 80 miles to even look for speakers. I'm really having a hard time finding anything on line that people here would recommend, I could really use some help on what to get?
I need a whole set of 5.1 speakers with sub. Budget between $1000. & $1500, is what I'm working with, so if anyone could point me in the right direction I sure would appreciate it, thanks for your help!

Not sure how to help you Kathy Jo.
Personally I would never buy a speaker I could not listen to first.
I understand you live out in the country. There are online sites that will allow you to return speakers if not satisfied with them.
Also I do not know how comfortable you are with something like EBay but you might be able to find something there although that gets into damage and warranty issues.
Good luck!

Brian Shannon, yeah I know I should hear them before I buy, but to tell ya the truth I don't know if I would be able to tell what sounds the best or not. And I'd be scared to buy speakers from e-bay for the same reason you suggested. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to reply and I'll keep looking, I have a brand new receiver setting here (Onkyo TX-DS797) and can't even use it untill I find the speakers for it.

Discostu1337 where are you getting your stuff from? Specialized Audio in Madison? The local shop where I bought mine (at the end of by block!) just went out of business.
