Why must I zoom out to fit entire picture?

Hey everyone, I have a 27" Sony Wega tv and a Toshiba SD-3750 DVD player. I noticed that when I zoom out once, I get more picture on the sides but it makes the whole picture a little smaller obviously, which isnt that big of a deal but why should I have to zoom out to see the entire picture? I have the tv and dvd player both in 16:9 mode...can anyone help? Thanks!

I'm no expert, but this site explains things pretty well:

Could possibly be due to your TV overscan.

Here are a couple of threads on the topic:

Unless you want to get into your tv's service menu (hint: if you don't know how to get into your tv's service menu that's a good indication that you probably shouldn't), you'll need a technician to do it.

Depending on the amount of overscan your tv has, you might not want to bother -- a small amount is completely normal.
