Why do the direct view HDTVs usually cost more than the big projection HDTVs? For standard definition TVs, it's usually just the opposite. I think I paid less for my 65" TV than what the 34" Toshiba usually costs.

The cost is directly reflected on the cost of the tubes. Before I bought my 41" RP Sony I was looking at a 35" RCA Home Theater tv. The prices were $2000 for the RCA and $1700 for the Sony. The owner of the Electronics store showed me in his parts book that if I was to have to replace the tubes in either tv, the RCA tube was $1500 vs. the 3 tubes in the Sony were only $478 for all three. Since there weren't any HD sets out then, I decided to go with the Sony 41" RP and wait for the prices on the HD sets to come down.

Man, is it a hard wait!!
