Why do people appear streched in on the PS2 DVD player?

When I watch a widescreen DVD on my PlayStation 2 through a conventional TV, the picture fills the whole screen (no black bars at the top and bottom) and stretches the image to fit.

There is an option in the PS2 DVD player menu to change the TV wide screen format, but I can't change this option (the option is greyed out).

So what's the deal here? Is there any way to fix this, or do I have to use a wide screen TV to get a perfect picture?

try changing the PS2 aspect ratio in th inital setup menu. Just take out whatever disc you're playing, press reset, and it should get you into the browser menu-you'll be able to make changes there.

I tried all three aspect ratio's (to compare any differences) in the initial setup menu, but it didn't seem to make any difference to the streched picture.

Any other suggestions?

It happens to any DVD that goes in. I think it has something to do with the way it's recorded onto the disc, called anamorphic. Wide screen DVD's are recorded with a stretched picture with an aspect ratio of 4:3, and then flattened out again on a wide screen so there's no image quality loss (At least that's the way I understand it). Only my PlayStation 2 isn't converting it properly or something like that.

Try hitting "O" twice to stop the dvd while you're playing it, and change the setting to 4:3 rather than 16:9. I don't think you can change it while the movie is playing, and you may not be able to do it while there is no dvd. It works with mine.
