Help! Sony DE345 DVD Set-up

I bought sony home theatre package a year ago and the receiver is model str-de345. I recently bought a pioneer dv-c503 dvd player and cannot figure out how to hook it up so that dvd's and cd's play through the receiver. The receiver is 5.1, and the dvd player has a bulit-in decoder, but the receiver doesnt have a "digital" input, and Im confused about this "PCM" and "DTS" stuff...Ive read the manuals and nothing I do seems to work...Is there a way to do this without buying a new receiver?

When you say "the receiver is 5.1," I'm assuming that you mean it is 5.1-ready, which means that it has 5.1 (aka 6) channels of analog inputs on the back panel.

If so, you need to do 2 things:

1) Connect the 5.1 analog outputs (Front Left, Front Right, Center, Surround Left, Surround Right, Subwoofer) from the dvd player to these inputs on the receiver.

2) Go to the audio menu of your dvd player and make sure the player is putting a signal out through it's 5.1 outputs. I'm not familiar with this Pioneer's menu, but you'll probably only have 2 choices.

If you don't have the outputs or inputs described in step 1, you'll need a new receiver to get 5.1 sound.

I hope this helps.
