Safe to put center speaker directly above TiVo unit?
Quick question... since speakers have magnets inside them (correct?), and TiVo units have hard drives in them, would it be a bad thing to sit my center speaker directly on top of my TiVo unit? I've heard that magnets + hard drives = erased hard drive.

Every center speaker should be magnetically sheilded(i would be very supprised if it wasn't) so I don't see any problem in that regard. That said I still wouldn't put anything on top of any component because of heat concerns. Components are not made to sit on top of each other and I am sure your manual has clearances referenced for heat dispersion.

Definately. Do not put your center on top of your Tivo. For both the reason you mentioned and the reason palebluedot mentioned. My ReplayTV has about five inches of clearence and it still gets really hot. I would not put anything on top of it, especially on top of the vents. As for the magnets, I don't know if it would be close enough to cause a problem, but I woudn't risk it. Hope we helped.

As far as venting goes, I think this unit is designed so that the air intake is in the bottom front and the vent is in the upper back, so as to avoid hitting other components. And the speaker is magnetically shielded... it has been sitting directly underneath my TV for the past year or so, and there have been no problems with picture quality.
My TiVo was an open box item, and didn't come with the setup & installation manual, where I figure clearance information might be located. Since my center speaker & TiVo unit are both Sony products, I'm thinking maybe I can call Sony and they would be able to help me out about their products.
If anyone has more yea or nay input, please let me know... I'll post more info after I talk to the Sony people.
Fire bad!

What about all that vibration from your speaker?
Even if your TiVo vents to the back, I wouldn't want to subject the speaker to that kind of heat (assuming that you don't want to replace it right away).
I'd find another location, if I were you.
