TV Speakers.... are poop
Hello Everyone,
I've got kind've a problem. I bought a Toshiba 32A41 TV this summer with a Pioneer DV - 343 player this summer. This is used in the suite of my apartment at college. The components work fine, the only problem I have is that when playing DVDs, the music through the speakers is so loud compared to the dialogue, even when playing a Stereo 2.0 track. I know this is most likely because on 5.1 mixes the center channel is used for dialogue, and I don't have a center channel.
Is there any way I can fix this aside from buying a nice audio setup? If not, what is a nice audio setup (I'd be looking at DTS capabilities, with a 5.1)? This is just an annoying problem, however one of my roomates has THX certified speakers that we bring in for good movies... he's gonna be a little more selectable now that I made him bring them out for Suspiria. That movie was a crap-fest. #1 horror film / gore / murder scene my ass.

Go through the audio menu of your dvd player, and see if there's a "dynamic range" or "nite" or "dialog enhancement" or anything like that.
Any of these functions, assuming you have one, will limit the peaks of the loud material.

I can't remember what it's called as I'm not near a 343 right now, but in the setup menu under audio there is a setting for dynamic range for 5.1 discs that will take care of it. Set it to the highest setting and it will take care of the problem. Look in the instruction manual and it shows how to set it and it explains what the setting does.
