RCA 38" 16:9 Question?

How do you set the TV so that you get the full use of the widescreen features. For example, when watching HBO HD the aspect ratio in the menu bar says 16:9, but when watching a DVD through the component video the same aspect ratio always reads 4:3. Shouldn't it read 16:9 with an anamorphic DVD? I am just trying to make sure I am using the TV to the best of its ability.
