Do you have a multi-region player?
 

I was just wondering if you ever (in America) order Region 2 titles?

European R2 = PAL. You'll need a multisystem TV in addition to a regionfree player.

Oh right, didn't know that. All our standard TV's over here play NTSC as well, no problems.

Well, does anybody have a multisystem tv too ?

Actually, the cheapie Sampo DVD player that I got automatically converts the PAL signal to NTSC. I've never actually tried it, but that's what the instruction manual says. With the hidden multi-region menu and MP3 playback ability, it's not a bad deal, though the video quality isn't always top-mark.

Speaking of which, I've been thinking of getting a better multi-region player for my Japanese DVDs. What are the other options?

Not necessarily. Many region-free DVD players convert from PAL to NTSC.

R2 Japan=NTSC

Besides Lost Highway, what other R2 Japan disks do you get?

Nothing will come in between me and my Apex player.

I have a Denon DVD-1100 that I picked up in HK when I was there on business, its labeled region 3, but plays everything, region 3, region 2 (NTSC) and region 1. I don't have a region 2/4 PAL DVD to test with to see how it will do.

i have several players and they are all region free, For pal dvd's I use the Hollywood plus card in one of my HTPC's. The pal conversion on that card is one of the better solutions out there.

I thought Japan was Region 3 ?

Europe is Region 2.

Both Japan and the UK are Region 2, since Japan uses NTSC and the UK uses PAL. The same deal with region 4- South America uses NTSC and Austrailia uses PAL, so both of those areas are Reigon 4 (guess they didn't take multi-system TVs into account.) Region 3 is most of Asia outside of Japan- I have a Region 3 disc of "Hush" from Columbia/Tristar I found at a used record store in San Francisco, which I bought just to make sure my region-selectable Pioneer could play it. It's the same as the region 1 disc except there's no French track but there are Chinese and Korean subtitles.

I have the Toshiba SD-1209. Can I still post in here? -wink-

I have plans to upgrade my DVD player, but not to a region-free one. I haven't had the need/want to buy DVD's from other regions yet. Maybe that will change with time.

Lots of anime and things like the Fifth Element and Avalon (the live action Oshii flick). Last night we rewatched the You're Under Arrest Movie in glorious DTS.

Not just that but I believe that 'Oh Brother Where Art Thou' was released on R2 about two or three months before it's R1 counterpart.

Nekobus, anime is pretty cool! Although, I haven't watched many anime DVDs. Most of the anime I've seen were on VHS. But, I've heard most of the best anime is region 2 only. But, with region free player RCE can be a problem if you want to region 1 DVDs.

You know something funny. My younger brother thinks Dragonball Z is the best animation ever and that it is made in America. Because, it has American voices and is on television here. He likes it better than Gundam Wing...because he thinks that show is a little bit "girly" lol. He doesn't watch Pokemon though. And that seems to be one of the most popular anime in the US. Anyways, you just can't win arguments with someone so stubborn.

It's also pretty interesting that after he saw Mulan...Princess Mononoke comes out and he's like "Disney made another girl warrior film?"
But, amazingly it has become his favorite animated film and he thinks it is Disney's. So, now each Disney film that has come out since has been just a bit disappointing. lol. It's ironic isn't it? Princess Mononoke is Japanese. But, I bet it's common for alot of people that don't anime to think the all animation on US television and movie theaters are American.

I remember thinking Speed Racer was American before I knew better.

Btw, this is totally different. But, since you get region 2 Japanese DVDs...you must know alot of Japanese. Did you ever watch the LD of Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail movie with the Japanese audio track? It's hillarious! I wonder if they have that for the DVD version. There doesn't seem to be alot of Japanese audio for region 1.

Finally, what does Nekobus mean? Neko means cat right? :)

The only people who make RCE discs right now are some of the big Hollywood studios, so it's not a problem with Japanese R2.

But, I bet it's common for alot of people that don't anime to think the all animation on US television and movie theaters are American.

A lot of people start out thinking that. It's nice that the Cartoon Network is showing more anime. Cowboy Bebop is very cool if you haven't seen it yet.

Right. Neko=cat bus=bus. It's the character from the Miyazaki movie My Neighbor Tottoro. It's one of my all time favorites and soon to be released on R2 DVD. We have Nekobuses and Tottoros scattered around the place.

im living in japan for the year so buying a multi-region player is looking like a better option all the time. i could just buy a region 2 player here but why be stuck with a player for every region i want to watch. the main reason for me to buy a multi-region is to watch japanese anime. however, more and more anime is being released in the US on dvd with japanese and english language tracks. on an entirely side note.....

nekobus - i finished student teaching in the spring. in the japanese class i taught, we did a unit on tonari no totoro and watched the whole thing in japanese. fun stuff, great anime. glad that you enjoy it also.

players with macrovision hacks
 

I am in the market for another DVD player and I would like to find one that can be easily hacked to eliminate macrovision. Please let me know those players that can be hacked with the pros and cons for them.

The Skyworth 1050P I have is Macrovision, Region, and RCE free I believe.
