Survey: Individual volume levels for your 5.1
What volume levels have you set for each of your 5.1 speakers, Pro-Logic or DD/DTS? Dialog is often difficult to hear from the Center channel when watching DVDs. At this setting I can reasonably hear dialog without drowning out the fronts.
I sit approx. 6 1/2 feet from the Center channel.
Receiver: Onkyo TX-DS 484
Speakers: Polk Audio
Center: +8*
Front Left: +1
Front Right: +2
Left Surround: +1
Right Surround: +2
Subwoofer: +12
My sitting postion is off slightly left of the "sweet spot" (it can't be helped). So what's worked for you?
*I'd like to add having the Center so high does emphasize dialog in lieu of left and right presence. Its a compromise since I also watch a lot of films that don't necessary have a lot of effects.

I also have Polks:
2 Rt2000i
1 cs400i
2 fx300i
I sit 9 ft from the Center and I was advised by the Circuit City Rep
to have the following config:
Fronts - +7db
Center - +9db
Rears - +12db
Onkyo DS777
I don't have a sub because the 2000's are powered speakers with the sub built-in. Does a real nice job btw.

Not sure the receiver settings mean much if you have a mix of speakers as I do. All are adjusted to 75 dB (-10 dB re ref. level) using a sound level meter and Avia DVD at center position. The volume level to produce 75 dB at reference is noted and used as a starting point, but I certainly change the master volume according to program material. I don't change the individual speaker settings (although I have thought about 1-2 dB center boost occasionally)
