Tau?
 

Has anyone compared Panasonic's TAU series televisions with the Sony WEGA series? How about JVC's flat screen televisions. More manufacturers seem to be coming out with their own flat screen tube TV's. Does any of them equal or surpass the WEGA?

I was looking at JVCs the other day in the store and thought they were very impressive.

Well i work at sears, and we have the 27 tau and 27 wega on the floor and the tau is beautiful... i would say it is equal to or better than the wega. At least thats what I tell customers :)
anyone have anymore technical approach to this topic?

IMHO Sony needs to get a longer warranty. 90 days/1 year is a joke when one pays $600 or more for a flat screen TV. Other brands have one year/one year at this price level and on even lower priced sets.

I think if you look at www.audioreview.com or one of those sites, you will find that people tend to prefer the Wega series over the Taus.

The sears guy doesn't have a technical answer? ;)

I've looked at the TAU as well, I think it looks better than the WEGA too, though. :)

The Tau series is very impressive, right up there along the lines of the Wega. However, if you are in the market for a 27" televisions be aware the Tau does not have a 16:9 mode whereas the Wega does. Larger Tau's (32 and above) do the anamorphic squeeze though making it a toss up between them and the Wega in my mind.

Had I waited about 2 months..I would have had this choce, as it is, I have a WEGA, and I really like it.

I've been agonizing over this the past few weeks.

I have decided that I prefer the picture of the Tau.

Also, I believe that the Panasonic is a slightly better value.

I really don't think that you can make a wrong decision though.

I also prefer the Tau's picture after debating whether to get it or a Wega. Plus, the Taus are cheaper. Couple that with a fantastic picture and I think the Taus are winners. The lack of anamorphic squeeze in the smaller TVs is bothersome, though.

Tau was my choice too. I love it!!!!!!

TAU a better value
 

I had almost purchased a 36 inch HS20 WEGA when I came across the TAU series. The picture on the 36HX41 looked as good or better than the WEGA. Couple that with the the price difference and I am going with the TAU. On the internet (which Sears will match) the HS20 WEGA goes for around $1900...and the TAU can be found for as low as $1550 (it is listed for $2199 at Sears!). If Sears will actually give that internet price I will be in possesion of a TAU this week.

After reading the reviews of the Tau on www.audireview.com I now have some concerns. There seems to be a lot of complaints about the Tau's geometry as opposed to the WEGA. Has anybody over here had a problem with their Tau?

I am considering the CT-32HX41.....My question is will I have the black bands at the top and bottom when receiving true HD with a set top box. Thanks.

Think about it for a minute. The TV is a standard 4:3 TV (but one that will accept an HDTV signal). HD content is 16:9. You have to either distort the picture or letterbox it. They choose the latter.

Thanks. But what does the so called anamorphic squeeze do?

It gives you the full 480 lines of resolution in the viewing part of the screen.
Otherwise the letterboxed portion wastes 120 lines giving you only 360 lines for the portion you watch.
