A/V Receiver as 'Partial' Preamp?

I'd like to hook up the front preouts from a Denon AVR-2801 to a 100W 2-channel Adcom amp I have, while having the Denon power the surrounds and center speakers. Will I have any problems doing this? Will volume balance be difficult? TIA.

You shouldn't have any problems. Use the Denon's internal speaker level control to adjust the volume just as you would if the speakers were powered from the Denon's internal amp.

Excellent. Thanks audrey.

I've tried this with a Yamaha receiver into an Aragon 8008, and
the results were OK, but not great; it 'worked', but it didn't sound
as clean as with a preamp.

But you've got nothing to lose, give it a shot!

Of course the results will vary depending on the quality of the receiver's pre-amp section. Using outboard power amps won't in and of itself, yield superior sound. And you also have to consider the quality of the amps.
