Denon AVR3300
The specs I've seen say DTS, DD decoding and upgradable to 6.1 (8 channel in and 8 channel pre-amp out)
Has anyone bought one of these and are they any good. I've seen them online for as low as $350. Seems cheap for a 105W/channel 5.1 DTS/DD receiver.

Ditto on both the 3200 and 3300. Had the 3200 and loved it. Sold it to a guy on ebay and bought a 3300 primarily for the DTS. I've had the 3300 over a year now and I like it a lot.

Many people have told me that this receiver's power is overrated. A nice receiver, but don't expect as much power as the Denon 3801. Personally I would get the Onkyo 595 in this price range.

BTW...It now looks like it's between the AVR3300 and the Outlaw 1050...Anybody have any comparison info, other than price. The AVR I can get refurbed for around 350, the Outlaw new for 499.
And finally, with the 3300, how exactly do you get to 6.1/7.1? I assume that the 8 pre-out means you can drive the 8 different speakers (2 Front, 2 Rear, 1 Center, 1 Sub, 2 Rear Accent), but that you'll need an amp(s) with 8 channels???? And how do you get 8 channels in? Do you have to buy a seperate decoder? It seems like you'd spend more getting to 6.1/7.1 than just buying a whole new receiver.

IMO both the 3000 and the Outlaw are fine. But if it were my money, I'd go w/ the Outlaw--it's stunning on HT and acceptable for music. I haven't heard the Onkyo so no thoughts on how it compares.
The Outlaw comes w/ a 30 money back guarantee. I'd order it and also get a loaner 3300 from a local store, then keep the one I liked best.

That was very important for me (well for my wife). It keeps the set-up very clean.

So does the 575x that came before it.
The original 575 was the last 5-series Onkyo without it.

Kinda off topic, but where online can I get an AVR-3300 for $350?
I wouldn't mind having this beast controlling my bedroon system, and the price definately seems right

Understand, these items are refurbs, but I bought the Pioneer Elite F07 300 DVD changer about 2 months ago refurbed, and it has worked flawlessly. Most refurbs are simple returns and have never even been out of the box.

i own a denon avr 3300 refurb from ubid and love it. for $300, it is, imho, the best value available (i paid about $450 a year ago). people were raving about it and they paid $700-$1100 for it 1-2 years ago! i run 4 ohm mmgs and they run fine.
one caveat, the fan is loud. when i organize my components, i will be putting sound absorption materials to minimize the "whir." i may eventually pop the top and pop a high quality fan in. some people say they don't hear any fan noise so your results may vary.
wrt running in 6.1 mode, i believe all you need to do is use the amp the run you 5 main channels (no extra expense), use a dual channel amp to run your side speaks and use a single channel amp to run your sub, if you have one. voila, you don't have any more room for people in your room anymore.
if i were you, i'd get the 3300 for $300 and smile very broadly. it will serve its purpose extremely well and the bang for the buck is immense.
here are some reviews (511, to be exact ;-)...

edit: apparently, there is a fix for the fan noise. it is about 5 reviews down at the audiorreview.com link. oh, and folks are paying $700 for this unit (new) even NOW and still rate it 5 stars!

$300 is such a great price for the Denon 3300. I paid $875 in January of 2000 for a brand new one. As for the fan noise issue: I think it's pretty hit and miss. I've never once been able to hear the fan on my receiver, but I've heard of several people who do.
As for the power being overrated, I beg to differ. The biggest factor if you think the unit's underpowered would be your speakers. I use Paradigm moniter speakers with mine, and have more power than I could ever use.
Unless you just have to have 6.1 and DPL 2, then the Denon is an awesome receiver. I don't have any intentions whatsoever of upgrading just to get the extra rear channel. IMO sound quality and deep bass give the home theater more of a "theatrical" atmosphere than extra channels, so that should be the main priority.
