Over the past few months, I've been sorta checking out progressive scan players. The cheapest I recall seeing listed for about $800 (the Denon DVD-2800). However, this weekend I saw both a Sony (DVPNS700P) and JVC (XVS65GD)progressive scan players that were selling for $350 and $250 respectively. Both are listed as new items, and I was wondering if anyone knows how they compare to some of the more expensive players.
P.S. The ad is from a small chain called Ultimate Electronics. |
One quick question. Do you have a TV that will receive a progressive signal? This would be either a HDTV or someting like the Sony Wega XBR. Otherwise you will not benefit from a progressive scan player.
Other than that I don't know too much about the 2 players you mentioned. I do know that there are more and more progressive scan players out there now and they are getting better and cheaper. The big thing you want to look for in a pro-scan player is 2:3 pulldown. The next thing would be the actual chip technology being used in the progressive scan circuit. The Sony is a very nice progressive player for the money. It does have the chroma bug but you would really need to be looking for it.
As for the TV, unless you have a larger TV that accepts a progressive input there would be no benefit to having this player. |
I own a JVC 723GD PS DVD player and am very pleased. JVC's players do not have the "chroma" bug and have been rated quite comparably with higher end models. I've been really happy. You might want to check over at http://www.hometheaterspot.com for more info on the specific players as they have forums dedicated to each manufacturer.
But, just as Brian said, you don't need this technology unless your TV can support it. |
Question about Progressive Scan DVD players...
Ok, here's my situation. I currently own a 1st generation Sony Wega XBR, it's a 36 inch XBR250.
Would I benefit from purchasing a progressive scan dvd player? I don't have progressive scan inputs on my tv... the highest level of video on my tv is component input (R/YB/YG, whatever it is). Would I benefit from the built in line doubler on the progressive scan dvd player? I currently have a two year old Sony 530D dvd player... (a lower level model that ran around $300.00 at the time). Am I getting the most out of what I own currently, on a visual level? I've been very pleased with the vertical squeeze and the extra resolution that is gotten from dvd's that are anamorphic... however, if there is something out there that's better, I would possibly interested, in say a line doubler for dvd's that aren't anamorphic... that would be nice. thanks.. sightandsound |
The JVC 723 is an excellent progressive scan player that performs 3 : 2 conversion and does not have the chroma bug. http://www.onecall.com is selling the player for $314.00 plus shipping.
