It probably doesnt matter that much, but I went ahead and bought a $40 monster optical cable and it works great.

Dont know about the cheaper ones, but there should not be a significant difference. However, if you have a few thousand dollars worth of HT equiptment, I would spend the extra money for a cable.

I bought a 15 dollar one and it works just fine. Swapped it with my friends monster cable and noticed no difference.. If the back of my equipment was viewable i'd buy the "nice looking" cable, but its not and I didn't

I also have an Acoustic Research Toslink I use to use but it keeps losing signal( I have to wingle the cable to get sound ). I just invested in a Good Quality COAX cable for my new progressive setup as well as component cables .

I've used various ones, and the $4 (wholesale) Recoton (makes the AR ones) work perfectly.

So, for $40 I not only get an optical cable but two dvd's with the change...
