I have the 40X81. Is the 40H80 that much better? Supposedly it has improved optics. Has anyone compared them side by side? Should I consider upgrading? Can I replace just certain components to improve my existing model?

1 HUGE difference is that the 40X81 is not HDTV ready. It's just a 16x9 interlaced TV. The "H" in the model # is for High Definition.

Also the 40H80 Does have improved insides to accomodate for HDTV. The H series is about to switch over to new 2002 models but of course those will be priced near MSRP so there is HOT deal's on the H series to be found. I just purchased a 65H80 and a Skyworth Progressive DVD Player.

So then would I be safe in saying with an HDTV decoder I should be OK?

If it's not HDTV ready, a decoder isn't going to do anything for you. A decoder doesn't convert a regular TV to HDTV. You'll need the HDTV-ready set + the decoder.

NOT TRUE. The very first Toshiba tw40H80 wasn't HDTV ready.
The tw40x81 IS. And ofcourse the newer 40h80 is.
I think Hellmutt has the second generation that is HDTV ready if I'm correct (that's the one I have as well).

The newest models coming out now have the 3:2 internal pulldown which is a plus, I think.

I wouldn't bother upgrading unless you are going to the 56" or higher. Or atleast wait to see if Toshiba puts out the mid 45" - 50" range like has been talked about.

Your right briank but some of the earlier model's of the 40x81 is not HDTV... which one I can't remember but I saw one last year on closeout at Tweeter and it was not HDTV ready needless to say I didnt buy it. Kinda like only 40H80 manufactured after Jan. 21 2001 have 3:2 pulldown but if you call Toshiba customer support they will tell you NO Toshiba's have 3:2 pulldown... wtf?
